Unrealistic Teacher Films

My mother is currently a literacy coordinator for Barlow Elementary School. Almost every day I see her bring home another slew of movies based on teaching techniques in the classroom.

Although these movies are simply making suggestions in order to help teachers, they hardly touch base on the reality of teaching in the classroom. These films show cookie cutter families dropping off their children for a perfect learning experience. Although it would be nice to believe that all public schools are like this, however it is far from the truth.

Previous to her career as a literacy coordinator, my mother had taught at a inner-city public school in Philadelphia. The teachers there were lucky if the children even attended full week of class. Many public schools today face limited resources and unruly children and nothing is being done about it. Teachers in today’s society need to take control of the classroom, but videos that show well behaved children in a perfect environment is hardly a reliable resource.

  1. An easy solution to unruly kids failing remedial classes? Have the state make parents pay the cost of tuition (~$8,000) if their kid fails. Can’t pay? Forced community service. I went to both public and private schools. The latter always have the reputation of having strict discipline and better grades due to it being a religious institution. But the reality is a little more practical: when every parent is shelling out $20,000 to put their kid through four years of high school, no one came home with an F unless he wanted an extended stay at the nearest hospital. Most families were middle class, so they were sacrificing a lot to give a quality education.

After all, you never appreciate something until you have to pay for it. Parents are no different than their kids in this respect.

  2. You are absolutely rigt when you state that those videos “hardly touch base on the reality of teaching in the classroom”. I too am an English Education major and my Sophomore Field was a terrible experience. The students were uninterested and rude. I was shocked myself to have been placed with a teacher who had absolutely no classroom management. Needless to say, it is extremely hard to find a controlled and well behaved classroom, especially in inner city schools.
